Headcount
Headcount is the number of employees on the rolls at a point in time, reported by department, location and type, and the base for most HR ratios.
It counts people, not hours; FTE (full-time equivalent) converts part-time hours to whole positions. Reports show opening, joiners, leavers and closing headcount for the period.
Budgeted versus actual headcount drives requisitions.
In Indian payroll
Statutory thresholds (20 for PF and bonus, 10 for ESI, 50 for crèche and POSH committee, 100 for standing orders) are headcount tests, so the number has legal consequences.
