12% from each side
The employee contributes 12% of basic plus DA. The employer matches 12%, but 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 is diverted to the pension scheme, so only 3.67% (plus anything above the ceiling) reaches the PF account.
The ₹15,000 ceiling
Statutory contribution is mandatory only on wages up to ₹15,000. Employers may contribute on full basic; many restrict to the ceiling, which is ₹1,800 from each side.
EDLI and admin charges
The employer also pays 0.5% of capped wages for EDLI life cover and 0.5% administrative charges (minimum ₹500 per establishment a month). Neither goes into the member's balance.
Interest
EPFO declares the rate each year; 8.25% for FY 2024-25. It is credited annually on the monthly running balance. The projection here compounds yearly for simplicity.
VPF
An employee can contribute more than 12% voluntarily at the same interest rate. Interest on employee contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year is taxable.
Due on the 15th
Contributions for a month are paid with the ECR by the 15th of the next month. Late payment attracts damages of up to 25% and 12% interest.
Questions people ask
Is PF calculated on basic salary or gross?
On basic plus dearness allowance. Since the 2019 Supreme Court ruling, allowances paid uniformly to all employees can also count as PF wages for employees under the ₹15,000 ceiling, so a very low basic with a large special allowance does not always reduce PF.
Why is the employer contribution to my PF account less than 12%?
Because 8.33% of wages up to ₹15,000 goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme, which pays a monthly pension after 58 rather than a lump sum. Your PF passbook shows the employer share as 3.67% for that reason.
Can I withdraw PF before retirement?
Partial withdrawals are allowed for specified needs such as home purchase, medical treatment, marriage or education after set years of service. Full withdrawal is allowed after two months of unemployment. Withdrawals before five years of service are taxable.
Is PF mandatory for my company?
Establishments with 20 or more employees must register, and coverage continues even if headcount later falls. Employees earning above ₹15,000 at joining and not already PF members can be excluded, but most companies cover everyone.
