How the numbers are worked out

CTC is not salary

CTC includes the employer share of PF and ESI and the gratuity provision. None of those reach the bank. Gross is CTC minus those; net is gross minus your own deductions.

Basic drives the statutory numbers

PF, gratuity and HRA are all percentages of basic. A basic of 40% to 50% of CTC is usual; the labour codes will require wages to be at least half of remuneration.

HRA is 40% or 50% of basic

50% in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai, 40% elsewhere. The tax exemption on it applies only under the old regime.

PF on ₹15,000 or on full basic

Most employers limit PF to the ₹15,000 wage ceiling, which is ₹1,800 a month from each side. Some contribute on full basic, which raises both deductions and cost.

ESI below ₹21,000 gross

If gross is within ₹21,000 the employee pays 0.75% and the employer 3.25%. The calculator settles the circular dependency between gross and the employer share for you.

TDS under the new regime

FY 2025-26: ₹75,000 standard deduction, slabs from 5% above ₹4 lakh, and a full rebate up to ₹12 lakh taxable income. Salary up to ₹12.75 lakh is effectively tax-free.

Questions people ask

Why is my in-hand salary so much lower than CTC divided by twelve?

Because CTC includes what the employer pays on your behalf (its PF share, ESI share and gratuity provision) and your take-home is further reduced by your own PF, professional tax and TDS. For a ₹6 lakh CTC the monthly credit is typically around ₹42,000 to ₹45,000.

Is the calculation for the old or new tax regime?

The new regime, which is the default since FY 2023-24. Under the old regime HRA exemption, 80C and other deductions reduce tax, so take-home can be higher for people with large deductions. Ask your employer for both computations.

Does the calculator include bonus or variable pay?

No. It treats the full CTC as fixed pay. If part of the CTC is a variable bonus, subtract it first and add it back when it is actually paid, when it is taxed.

Which state should I choose for professional tax?

The state where you physically work. Professional tax follows the work location, not the company headquarters. Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and several others do not levy it.
