Minimum wages

Minimum wages are the lowest daily or monthly wages an employer may pay, fixed by each state for categories of work and skill and revised with a dearness component twice a year.

Rates differ by state, zone, industry and skill level (unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, highly skilled). Most states publish a basic rate and a variable DA revised in April and October.

The Code on Wages introduces a national floor wage below which no state may fix its minimum.

In Indian payroll

Contract and shop-floor structures must be checked against the current notification every revision. Paying minimum wage but with a basic below it, made up by allowances, is a common inspection finding.
