UANUniversal Account Number
The UAN is a 12-digit number issued by the EPFO that stays with an employee across jobs and links all their PF member IDs.
Each employer creates a member ID under the employee's existing UAN, so balances from previous jobs can be transferred online rather than withdrawn.
Employees use the UAN portal to see their passbook, download statements and file claims; KYC (Aadhaar, PAN, bank) must be seeded and approved by the employer.
In Indian payroll
Onboarding should capture the UAN on day one. A joiner without one gets a UAN generated with the first ECR, and a wrong Aadhaar name match is the most common reason a claim is rejected later.
