Contribution period
A contribution period is one of the two six-month spans in ESI, April to September and October to March, during which coverage, once established, continues regardless of wage changes.
ESI eligibility is checked at the start of each period. An employee whose wages rise above ₹21,000 in June stays covered, and contributions continue, until 30 September.
Each period has a matching benefit period six months later, during which the employee can claim.
In Indian payroll
Payroll must remember the coverage decision for the period rather than re-test every month. Dropping ESI the month after an increment is a common, and costly, mistake.
