Payroll

Basic salary

Basic salary is the fixed core component of pay on which PF, gratuity, HRA and most statutory calculations are based.

Basic is the foundation of the salary structure. It is fully taxable, does not vary with performance, and most other components are defined as a percentage of it.

A low basic reduces PF and gratuity outgo for both sides but also reduces the employee's retirement corpus and can breach minimum-wage rules once the labour codes take effect.

In Indian payroll

Employers typically set basic at 40 to 50 percent of CTC. The new labour codes define "wages" so that basic plus DA must be at least half of total remuneration, which many structures will need to adjust to.
