Payroll
Arrears
Arrears are amounts owed for an earlier period and paid in a later payroll, usually after a backdated increment, a late attendance correction or a missed component.
When an increment is effective from April but processed in June, the difference for April and May is paid in June as arrears. The same happens for regularised attendance, retrospective DA revisions or a component that was missed.
Arrears are taxed in the year they are received, though Section 89 relief can spread the impact.
In Indian payroll
PF on arrears is due in the month of payment, and ECR filings must reflect it. Payroll systems that compute arrears automatically from a revised structure avoid the spreadsheet that always gets one month wrong.
