A disclosure before the list
This article is written by Kuzhu, an HRMS vendor that appears in it. We have tried to make that a feature: every entry says who the product suits better than we do, and no competitor’s price is quoted, because prices change and a stale figure is a claim we cannot stand behind. Where we are not the right fit, we say so; a list that always picks its author is a list nobody trusts.
The nine below are the products Indian buyers of 10 to a few thousand employees shortlist most often. Each has a fuller treatment on our comparison pages.
The nine, one by one
Kuzhu
Kuzhu is an all-in-one HR and payroll platform for Indian businesses: 20 modules, from attendance, leave and payroll to expenses, assets, procurement, CRM and a support desk, on one employee record. PF, ESI, professional tax and TDS are computed inside the payroll run, each company gets its own database hosted in India, and onboarding includes a parallel payroll reconciled to the rupee.
- Best for: companies of 10 to 500 employees consolidating HR, payroll and operations on one record, especially those with biometric devices, field staff or shifts.
- Not the fit when: you have thousands of employees across countries, or the centre of the requirement is talent management and a deep OKR suite; Darwinbox and Keka are built for those.
Keka
Keka is a widely used Indian HRMS from Hyderabad, known for a polished interface, a mature performance-management suite, payroll built for Indian compliance and a large ecosystem of integrations and partners. Plans are company-level tiers with a monthly minimum.
- Best for: mid-size and larger companies with an HR team and a performance or OKR focus.
- Not the fit when: you are small enough that a tier with a minimum means paying for seats you do not fill, or your priority is operations rather than HR depth.
greytHR
greytHR, from Bengaluru, is one of India’s longest-running payroll and HR products, with statutory compliance at its core and a wide base of small and mid-size companies and their accountants. It covers payroll, leave, attendance, onboarding and self-service. Plans are company-level tiers with a per-employee rate, and there is a free tier for very small companies.
- Best for: payroll-first companies, and chartered accountants and payroll consultants who already work in it.
- Not the fit when: you want expenses, assets, procurement, a CRM or a support desk on the same record. greytHR is payroll with HR attached, and honest about it.
Zoho People
Zoho People is the HR product of the Zoho suite, built by Chennai-based Zoho and used by companies of every size that already run Zoho CRM, Books or Desk. Payroll is the separate Zoho Payroll product. It is priced per user per month across editions, with a free edition for very small teams.
- Best for: companies standardised on Zoho that want HR under the same admin, logins and bill.
- Not the fit when: you want statutory payroll inside the HR system rather than in a second product.
Darwinbox
Darwinbox is an enterprise HCM platform from Hyderabad, built for large organisations and used across India and Asia for core HR, talent management, engagement, payroll and workforce analytics. It is sold and implemented as an enterprise project, and priced by quote with no self-serve plan.
- Best for: large enterprises with multiple entities or countries and a talent-management agenda.
- Not the fit when: you are a company of 10 to 500 people that wants to be live in weeks rather than months.
HROne
HROne is a Noida-based HRMS for mid-market Indian companies, covering core HR, payroll, attendance, performance, recruitment and expenses, known for an inbox-style interface with every pending action in one queue. It is priced per employee per month across plan tiers, with a free trial rather than a free plan.
- Best for: mid-market companies with a few hundred employees whose managers work from a single action queue.
- Not the fit when: you want procurement, assets, CRM, a support desk and invoicing on the same record as HR; the roadmap is aimed squarely at mid-market HR.
Pocket HRMS
Pocket HRMS is a Mumbai-based cloud HR and payroll product for small and mid-size Indian companies, with payroll and statutory compliance at its centre and attendance, leave, onboarding and an employee app around it. It is priced per employee per month in plan tiers, with a free trial rather than a free plan.
- Best for: SMBs that want payroll-first HR with an employee app and a chat assistant from a long-established vendor.
- Not the fit when: you need much beyond HR and payroll on the same record.
Zimyo
Zimyo is a Gurugram-based HR and payroll platform for small and mid-size Indian companies, covering core HR, attendance, leave, payroll, performance, recruitment and engagement, plus employee benefits such as salary advances and insurance. It is priced per user per month in plan tiers, with a free trial rather than a free plan.
- Best for: SMBs that want HR, payroll and employee benefits in one per-user subscription, with engagement features the HR team will use.
- Not the fit when: you are consolidating operations onto the employee record; the suite is broad on HR and benefits, not on procurement, assets or invoicing.
RazorpayX Payroll
RazorpayX Payroll is the payroll product of Bengaluru-based Razorpay, built payroll-first: it computes salaries and PF, ESI, PT and TDS, then pays salaries and files and pays statutory dues automatically from a RazorpayX account. It is priced per employee per month, with a free plan for small teams.
- Best for: salaried, office-based startups and small companies that want statutory dues filed and paid, not just computed, and are happy to bank with RazorpayX.
- Not the fit when: payroll must read real attendance from biometric devices, shift rosters or field punches. It needs an HRMS in front of it for that.

How we would choose, by company size
Under 15 employees
Use a free tier. If the pain is payroll and everyone is salaried, RazorpayX Payroll’s free plan or greytHR’s free tier does the job. If the pain is attendance and leave, Kuzhu Basic gives core HR, mobile punch and leave balances free for life, and Zoho People’s free edition suits a team already on Zoho.
15 to 100 employees
Look for per-employee pricing with no minimum and payroll inside the run: Kuzhu, Pocket HRMS, Zimyo and greytHR all fit, and the choice turns on whether you want operations on the same record, benefits in the platform, or the payroll engine your accountant knows.
100 to 500 employees
If the priority is consolidating attendance, payroll, expenses, assets and procurement onto one record, Kuzhu. If it is performance management, OKRs and a partner ecosystem, Keka. If it is a mid-market suite with an action queue managers take to quickly, HROne. Run the payroll month on your own data with the two you like best, as the buyer’s guide describes.
500 and above
Keka and HROne are built for this range, and Kuzhu Enterprise covers multi-entity, multi-location groups within India with a dedicated database and an SLA. Where there are several countries, or a talent agenda with analytics behind it, Darwinbox enters the shortlist and the implementation becomes a project with a team; the others on this list are not built for that scale.
What this list does not do
It does not rank the nine with stars, because the right product for a 30-person clinic is the wrong one for a 3,000-person group, and it does not quote prices, because they change. None of these products is bad; each is the right choice for the companies described under it.
See Kuzhu compared with each of these products, row by row, with a plain verdict on who should pick which.
Open the comparison pagesQuestions people ask
Which is the best HRMS software for a small business in India?
For a team under 15, a free tier: Kuzhu Basic for core HR and attendance, or RazorpayX Payroll’s free plan if payroll is the whole need. Between 15 and 100, pick per-employee pricing with no minimum and payroll inside the run; Kuzhu, Pocket HRMS, Zimyo and greytHR all qualify.
Which HRMS is best for payroll compliance in India?
Kuzhu, greytHR, Keka, HROne, Pocket HRMS and Zimyo all compute PF, ESI, professional tax and TDS inside the run. greytHR has the longest statutory history; RazorpayX Payroll files and pays the dues automatically for salaried teams; Kuzhu adds the attendance, shift and leave inputs on the same record. Zoho People needs Zoho Payroll alongside it.
Is there a free HRMS in India?
Yes, several. Kuzhu Basic is free for life for companies up to 15 employees, with employee records, attendance, leave, documents and the mobile app. greytHR has a free tier for very small companies, Zoho People a free edition, and RazorpayX Payroll a free plan for small teams. Payroll is on paid plans in every case except RazorpayX.
What is the difference between Keka and greytHR?
Keka is an HR suite with payroll and a strong performance-management side, sold as company-level tiers with a minimum to mid-size companies with an HR team. greytHR is payroll-first, with HR modules around a statutory engine accountants have used for decades, on company tiers with a per-employee rate and a free tier.
How should we compare HRMS vendors fairly?
Shortlist three with different pricing models, get a written quote from each at your real headcount with every add-on and GST shown, and run the same payroll month on the same twenty employees with each. Compare the registers, the challan files and the second-year cost, and ignore dashboards and AI features.
