Private employers are not bound by the government list. Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are paid national holidays everywhere; beyond those, the state’s festival-holiday law or the establishment’s standing orders set how many paid festival holidays must be given, and the employer chooses which ones and notifies the list at the start of the year.

A holiday that falls on the weekly off is usually not replaced unless the company’s policy says so. Staff who work on a paid holiday get double wages or a compensatory day off, depending on the law that applies to the establishment.
